Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen awarded the certificate of recognition to Samtse, Tsirang, and Thimphu Thromde for their contribution to waste management and environmental activities in the Dzongkhag and Thromde. The certificates were awarded at the opening of the annual environmental officers’ conference organized by the National Environment Commission (NEC) on 3rd July 2018 in Thimphu.
Samtse Dzongkhag bagged the first position. The Dzongkhag had poster competitions, advocacy programmes, cleaning campaigns, stream and water sources protection initiatives within Schools, Business communities, Gewogs & Dungkhags. Area adoption for ownership & proper waste management within Municipality were also initiated in the Dzongkhag. Royal Bhutan Police and Road Safety and Transport Authority also sensitized more than 100 drivers on waste management during the World Environment Day. The Sustainable Land Management, Water Source Protection and Bio-gas were some of the important other environmental initiatives undertaken by RNR Sectors in different Gewogs and Dungkhags.
The Dzongkhag pledged to reduce the use of plastic plates through alternative use of eco-friendly bio-Plates during the conduct of any programmes within Dzong premises as the first step toward plastic reduction. This year World Environment Day was celebrated with the theme “beat plastic pollution”.
