World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated on 4th June 2018 on the Theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” coinciding with 28th Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen Ashi Jetsun Pema Wangchuck who is also the Royal Patron for the conservation of Environment. In Samtse the event was held at Samtse HSS MP Hall.
The program started with the offering of butter lamps for the long life of Her Majesty and singing of our National Anthem. More than 600 participants including guests and students attended the event. The Chief Guest, Samtse Dzongda highlighted the ill effects of plastics and urged the students to reduce the use of plastics and to initiate the thinking process on how best to replace plastic. Students displayed various arts and posters apart from the School's Nature Club also exhibiting beautiful products made from wastes.
To mark the day's importance and to create greater awareness Samtse Dzongkhag Administration decided to disallow the use of plastic plates, cups and spoons for all its food catering related services and urged all others particularly the regional offices to adopt the same.
Similar programs and cleaning campaigns were organized in the 2 Dungkhags and all Gewogs.
