Bhutan River Cleaning Program

On World Water Day (March 24, 2025), Bhutan launched a nationwide river cleaning program, beginning with the Wangchhu basin. This initiative is an important step in caring for our rivers and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come. By 2028, the program will reach every district across the country.

On August 27, 2025, Gyeltshen Dukpa met with the Dzongkhag Administration and 15 Gups to discuss the way forward. The meeting focused on two main goals:

  • Clearing waste from rivers and surroundings
  • Raising awareness so communities can join hands in building a cleaner, more responsible Bhutan

This effort is more than just a cleaning drive — it’s about nurturing a culture of care and responsibility, reminding us that our rivers are lifelines that sustain every Bhutanese household, field, and forest.

With communities, leaders, and volunteers working together, the program hopes to inspire everyone to take small but meaningful steps — like reducing plastic waste, organizing local clean-up campaigns, and teaching the younger generation about river conservation.

Together, we can make Bhutan’s rivers sparkle again.
